One of the UK’s leading multidisciplinary rail infrastructure contractors, VolkerRail, has invested in an integrated mobile platform to streamline project deliveries, enable more informed decision-making and drive continuous improvement.
The solution, powered by eviFile, headquartered in Leeds, enabled VolkerRail to capture thousands of geolocated data points throughout the delivery of a 10-month project for Chiltern Railways, saving an average of one day per week.
As part of the ‘Tomorrow Now’ digital transformation and innovation program led by VolkerRail’s parent company, VolkerWessels UK, eviFile was introduced to help reduce the company’s reliance on email and paper storage systems, with the introduction of a digitized workflow solution.
Elaborating on the background of the project, eviFile Managing Director Luke Allen explained, “VolkerRail continues to deliver multiple multi-million pound contracts, and after each successful project is looking for new ways to help its teams become more efficient while offering more to its customers.
“We held workshops with managers, engineers and field workers to make sure the solution met their needs – applying an agile development methodology and creating prototypes for review and refinement based on feedback received.
“I hope the solution speaks for itself, providing robust data collection, seamless connectivity between sites and offices, availability of real-time progress data, reductions in paper and displacement and ease of upward adoption.
The initial pilot project consisted of capturing investigative information regarding Train Protection and Warning Systems (TPWS), cable trays, signal cabling and access points. Configured to provide a range of personalized reports in real time, the interface allows users to monitor the overall progress of the survey as well as the status of individual data collection processes.
Ed Arnold, Project Control Manager at VolkerRail, added: “We are a company built around its people and we believe that digital is more about people than technology. Our goal, as part of our “Tomorrow Now” transformation, is to give our teams the awareness, culture and ability to embrace technology, to help us automate or perform regular tasks faster.
“When we were working on a project for Chiltern Railways, we needed an information capture and progressive assurance tool to help manage on-site activities.
“Going forward, we look forward to exploring the potential of expanding survey data to cover installation tracking, quality assurance, virtual snapping and rendering, as well as integration into our Common Data Environment (CDE).
The growing presence of eviFile in the market, as an agile digital workflow solution, is already having a positive impact on overhead projects in railways, critical infrastructure pipelines and non-destructive testing in the industry. electricity for major contractors and service providers such as Network Rail, SPL, United Utilities and Drax.
