Sunday, 18 April 2010

A new objec was discovered on the 16 of April at the Crni Vrh Observatory. It appeared very soon to be a new periodic comet, designed P/2010 H2, in an outburst phase.

Giovanni Sostero and Ernesto Guido were among the first to report the cometary nature of the object.

Af[rho] quantity measurements in R and/or I bands are urgently needed to monitor the evolution of the event. Hipparcos solar analogs are highly recommended as reference stars.

Since 1998 the GOC has been exploring the CCD technique related to observation of comets with particular attention to the photometric approach.

This cames from the finding that a number of comets can be currently observed with small telescopes and CCD arrays by amateur astronomers, granting a nearly continuous photometric monitoring of these objects. On the other hand we realized that CCD observations contain much more scientific information that the one that can be achieved by the classical cometary photometry devoted to determine the total magnitude of the coma.

Looking for a compromise between scientific results and a relatively simple observing technique, we approached to the Afrho quantity, a parameter used for the study of cometary dust, that appears to satisfy our requirements.

The aim of this first release of the observing program and the related archive is to give a starting point for developing a well standardized basic techinque for amateur astronomers involved in CCD comet observing. The program will be upgraded as things go on.
